A high security lock is designed to not be “bumpable”, a term used for locks that are easy to pick. Key bumping uses a key blank that has been specially modified to open pin-tumbler based locks.
High security locks use a keyway that is unique in the way that it is cut, are usually cut directly from the factory, and are not available through the usual retail channels.
Because of the (often patent protected) designs and high number of real and theoretical key differs (the number of possible keys for a given lock), high security locks have a strong advantage over standard locks when protecting sensitive areas and property.

In order to get a second key cut, you must have a signature card proving that you own the system. This is great for commercial applications where there more than one employee may have access to a business. Duplicate keys are not readily accessible, or duplicated, since specialized key cutting machines are often required.
High security locks also have the benefit of slowing down a would be thief gaining entry, by being too time consuming to break or damage.
